Among them–– there is no beauty without consequence. No magic without chaos. One foot steps and then another and another. Every night is a good night for dancing and/or kissing when you are in love. The small of the back, the curve of the spine, is carved from empty promises. Otherwise, shoulders surely are steering wheels. I taste your teeth whenever I drink whiskey. I never listened to country music until I felt I was alone. Some man confesses he can smell your perfume through these whispering pines, and I cannot remember your scent. You wear boots so that copperheads can’t break through the skin. Surely there are snakes among us, looking to poison a good thing. Surely, I can shed my skin here. You can do better with your eyes closed. When I close my eyes, I see you. Only you. Loving and dancing and kissing–– it’s all a practice in eliminating distance.
